Description
This exhibition, on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme explores how film makers took war as an inspiration, turning stories of love and loss, fear and courage, triumph and tragedy into movies for the big screen.
There will be personal stories and surviving wartime artifacts alongside film industry props, scripts and set designs.
Films featured include The Dam Busters, Where Eagles Dare, Apocalypse Now, Battle of Britain, Das Boot, Casablanca, Jarhead, Saving Private Ryan, Atonement and War Horse.
Films included range from those promoting the heroism of the combatants, to those which delve into the darker side of human nature.
In addition to showing clips from the finished product, the exhibition explores the film-making process and how war movies have subsequently gone to shape the public's perception of military battles.
The exhibition contains over 200 items, including film clips, costumes, props, scripts, sketches and designs, along with original archival material and artifacts from the Imperial War Museum’s collection.
