Description

Drawing on the Museum of London’s rich archaeological collections, Fire! Fire! will feature rarely seen artefacts from 1666 as well as multimedia and hands-on exhibits.

The exhibition will be designed to give a sense of London in 1666, before, during and after the blaze. It will also look at the causes of the fire and how London was rebuilt afterwards, as well as comparing modern and contemporary firefighting techniques. The personal stories of Londoners who experienced the fire and the impact it had on their lives will be highlighted in the exhibition.

Objects which will be displayed for the first time include an unfinished piece of embroidery, reputed to have been saved from a house in Cheapside at the time of the Great Fire of London in 1666. It may have been packed up in haste and forgotten about in the chaotic aftermath of the fire, remaining unfinished to this day.

Fire! Fire! is part of Great Fire 350, a programme of events and activities in partnership with the City of London Corporation, Barbican, Artichoke and others to mark the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London.
