What soldiers did in London whilst on leave or passing through en route to the trenches came under increasing scrutiny as the War unfolded.
Professor Rachel Cowgill, Head of Music and Drama at the University of Huddersfield, reveals how anxiety about discipline and deportment had a strong bearing on musical provision. Focusing on West End nightclubs, she explores how one ragtime joint was transformed into a YMCA music club, demonstrating how important ‘the right sort of music’ was seen to be in maintaining soldierly conduct.
This talk complements the Academy Museum’s current exhibition, War Music: Notes from the First World War.
