Curator Julia Farley, British Museum, explores the politics of the Roman conquest of Britain.
The Romans occupied southern England in AD 43, but for several generations they struggled to control rebellious uprisings across the new province of Britannia. Some native leaders sided with the Roman conquerors, while others led bloody revolts.
During this unstable period there was no simple distinction between Roman and non-Roman, enemy and friend.
Some Britons fought alongside the imperial army, and allegiances could quickly change. This tale of diplomacy and deception, empire and war is told through the lens of the objects these peoples left behind.
Includes a complimentary drink.
