This tour heads east into Moorgate and the Bank Conservation area where the buildings’ essential scale and predominately Portland stone or granite elevations remain largely unchanged since the early 20th Century. Post-war low-level concrete-and-glass offices failed to justify their survival as the working population doubled in the City’s post-Big Bang era. Exceptions are notable today where just a handful have been successfully re-dressed as retrofits seguing into the radically changing landscape east of Bishopsgate. The now iconic shapes of Leadenhall’s shiny sky-high pavilions emphasise the City’s determination to maintain leadership in international financial markets while prioritising the public realm and respecting the ancient grid pattern. Latest developments south and eastwards are demanding a radical re-shape of Aldgate where we end our tour.
