The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), in partnership with the APPG on Air Pollution and Greenpeace, is delighted to invite you to a discussion on how to solve London’s air pollution crisis, and the launch of IPPR’s latest report.
Air pollution in London is now so severe that it ranks above alcohol consumption or obesity in terms of its impact on the health of Londoners, causing the equivalent of 9,400 deaths in 2010 alone.
On the back of Sadiq Khan's decision to make air pollution a central issue in his first Mayor term, IPPR has undertaken extensive work designed to set out what policies he can pursue to reach legal compliance on air pollution in the capital. This has so far included publishing Zero Carbon London, London: A Global Green City, and a discussion paper called Lethal and Illegal.
This final report uses newly commissioned modelling from King’s College, London on the scale of the problem and provides a suite of policies to bring London to compliance with legal limits. The research will also quantify the health impacts of these policies and provide a guide to the ameliorative efforts the GLA, businesses and central government can take to ensure the transition to legal and healthy levels of air quality is as efficient and equitable as possible.
Speakers will include:
Shirley Rodrigues (Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy)
Matthew Pennycook MP (Chair, APPG Air Pollution and MP for Greenwich and Woolwich)
Barbara Stoll (Senior Air Quality campaigner at Greenpeace)
We are grateful to Greenpeace for their ongoing support, input and sponsorship of this project.
