The Nether World is George Gissing’s ultimately bleak portrayal of working class life in Clerkenwell in the 1880s. Although the slums have gone, many of the streets and locations described in the novel can still be found today.
On this walk we’ll recreate the atmosphere of Victorian Clerkenwell with readings from the novel as we follow the fluctuating fortunes of its characters “amid the squalid and toil-infested ways of Clerkenwell”.
The walk will last about 2 hours. It starts and finishes at Farringdon Station.
Please check travel arrangements on the day at Transport for London's Journey Planner site.
