Technical Curator of the Pathology Museum and MA student in ‘Museum Cultures’ with a focus on Exhibiting the Body (Birkbeck, University of London)

As a volunteer embalmer, qualified Senior Anatomical Pathology Technologist (educated and experienced in skeletal excavation) and technical curator of the Pathology Museum, Carla has encountered human remains in many different forms over the years.

In this interactive, introductory lecture she will address the importance of the pathology specimens at QMUL’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, the various historical ways in which human remains have been perceived, and how we can move forward with collections such as these. Join her on a journey through necromancy, medieval Memento Mori, Victorian public anatomy collections, body snatching (then and now) and the comparatively recent formation of the Human Tissue Authority and updated legislation.

This illustrated talk involves interactive, electronic quiz for attendees and a summary and rationale of the upcoming events in the season, as well as exclusive extracts from Carla’s book ‘Past Mortems’ to be published by Sphere in Spring 2017.
