On this walk we’ll discover the history of three London river crossings - Vauxhall, Lambeth and Westminster. Why did the thirteenth century London Bridge remain the only bridge across the Thames in central London for over 500 years? Why was there so much opposition to the building of a bridge at Westminster? Why did the Archbishop of Canterbury oppose proposals for a bridge at Lambeth? Who required compensation when Vauxhall Bridge was opened? We’ll learn about these river crossings both past and present as well as a futuristic proposal which was never implemented.
As we walk beside and across the river we’ll also hear stories of spies, floods and imprisonment and look at some of the iconic buildings along this stretch of the riverside.
The walk lasts about two hours. It starts at Pimlico tube station and finishes at Westminster.
This walk finishes close to the starting point for the afternoon walk Beyond the Great Stink also part of the Footprints of London River Festival. You could continue to this walk after lunch and cover five bridges in a day!
Please check travel arrangements on the day at Transport for London's Journey Planner site.
This event is part of Totally Thames that runs from 1-30 September 2016.
