The long, hot, dry summer of 1666 …. an accident in a baker’s shop, and disaster struck.
Join a City of London Guide and explore the most famous fire in British history; see it through the eyes of Samuel Pepys, a resident of the City and a prolific diarist.
Hear about the Fire’s progress through the narrow and congested streets, the destruction of everything in its path, the breakdown of social order and the fight-back that involved the King, a Duke, an Admiral and the Lord Mayor.
Find out about the firefighting equipment, post-fire laws and how London was rebuilt, rising, phoenix-like from the ashes. The walk ends at St Paul’s Cathedral, with architect Sir Christopher Wren’s magnificent replacement of the destroyed building.
In the City … one week only!
Meet at the Fish Street Hill exit of Monument underground station (Circle and District Line).
