New London Walking Tour - King's Cross St Pancras

This event has finished Took place on: Saturday, 25th Jun 2016

 Free

To celebrate the London Festival of Architecture, NLA has commissioned a special series of New London Walking Tours, happening every Saturday for the month of June. Our walks will explore interventions being implemented across the capital to enhance, enrich and encourage interaction, engagement and community growth in areas of huge development. As well as tracking the wider development of these areas, our walks will visit a number of carefully designed schemes where outdoor public space is given extra attention to create attractive and comfortable places for communities to grow.

King’s Cross St Pancras - Saturday 25 June - 14:00

The dramatic renewal of this key two-station transport hub kick-started the transformation of 67acres of old railway and industrial land behind, now known as King’s Cross Central. We will learn about five new office pavilions in various stages of readiness designed by architects as diverse as David Chipperfield and Porphyrios Associates which surround the newly created Pancras Square, part of the 26 acres of new parks, public squares and open space being created for the area’s existing and new communities.

Beyond and separated by the Regents Canal, our New London walk highlights a series of 19th century industrial buildings which are being imaginatively restored to house an art school, a gallery, offices, cooking schools, event spaces, a theatre, a clutch of bars and restaurants and a supermarket by Bennetts Associates. These sit adjacent to schools, parks, pools and an array of new residential apartment pavilions by AHMM, Macreanor Lavington and Glenn Howells. Still very much a work in progress, King’s Cross Central is already north London’s most exciting destination.

This walk starts at St Pancras Station upper concourse by the giant statue of a couple called 'The Meeting' and finishes outside King’s Cross Station. London Festival of Architecture runs from 1–30 June. www.londonfestivalofarchitecture.org
