Once the area east of the Tower of London was alive with the maritime trade which brought goods from all over the globe to fill our shops and fuel our industry. The river was alive with shipping, while sailors came ashore looking for fun after months of hardship. Then the docks fell silent.
Though development has threatened to scour away the traces of London’s maritime glory, you can yet see reminders of this time, tidemarks left behind among the reshaped East End.
This is a story of devastation and survival, in an area which embodies the challenges to London’s heritage, but also rejoices in reminders of its greatness. Come hear about the growth of the docks, of Old London’s Scandinavian quarter, and taste the salty tang of life spent on London’s tidal artery.
