New London Walking Tour - Fitzrovia

To celebrate the London Festival of Architecture, NLA has commissioned a special series of New London Walking Tours, happening every Saturday for the month of June. Our walks will explore interventions being implemented across the capital to enhance, enrich and encourage interaction, engagement and community growth in areas of huge development. As well as tracking the wider development of these areas, our walks will visit a number of carefully designed schemes where outdoor public space is given extra attention to create attractive and comfortable places for communities to grow. 

Fitzrovia - Saturday 11 June - 14:00

Starting at New London Architecture, this walk will investigate how Fitzrovia's carefully restored Georgian splendour sits next to dynamic, contemporary office schemes. From its charming down-at-heel bohemian fabric, a refreshed Fitzrovia today counts among London’s prime business and residential locations.

Its original 18th century street grid pattern largely respected, our walk discovers how architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands and Sheppard Robson have created a dramatic addition at its heart with a substantial live/work London square - the first for over a century - Fitzroy Place. It will soon be matched in scale by Make Architects’ emerging Rathbone Square, creating an exciting new public space for the West End community. Meanwhile, other recent replaced, refurbished and retrofitted smaller developments by Barr Gazetas Architects and Rolfe Judd Ltd, among others, have been the key to sustaining Fitzrovia’s ambience thanks to a lively mix of retail, restaurants, offices, galleries and hotels in side-by-side coexistence.

This walk starts at NLA and finishes near Great Portland Street tube station.
