History With A Difference - A Talk And A Book Signing

A walk through time 100 years from 1862-1962 in east London; a time of great change internationally, nationally and locally. At the start of this period children were often put to work from 6 years old, the elderly had to work or go into the workhouse as there was no state pension. Housing was often substandard and working conditions were harsh. Gradually as the years passed changes began to improve the lot of the working classes, by the end of the book children received a state education until the age of 15 and the elderly were paid a state pension.

Come and find out about some of the old street trades of the 1920s-1930s, hear about the music halls, and some of the well known people who frequented the area or were raised there. Both World wars including the unusual recruitment drives in WWI and the Bethnal Green tube disaster of WWII in which 173 men, women and children died needlessly - a percentage of net book sales will be donated to the Stairway to Heaven Memorial Fund to help them complete a memorial to those who died that night in March 1943.
