First World War Mesopotamia And The Siege Of Kut-al-amara

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 13th Apr 2016

 Free

This talk will look at the infamous First World War siege of Kut-al-Amara, in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq), during which the 6th (Poona) Division of the Indian Army, commanded by Major-General Charles Townsend, was surrounded by Turkish troops for 147 days, leading to their eventual surrender. Even today, the siege of Kut continues to overshadow an otherwise highly successful campaign.

Our collection of First World War records is one of the largest in the world. It includes, amongst many other documents, service records, letters, diaries, maps and photographs. During the centenary we are opening up this collection and hosting a variety of events and exhibitions, engaging in key debates and topics from the war.
