The Peterloo Massacre was the defining moment of popular politics in the 19th century. On 16 August 1819, around 60,000 people assembled on St Peter’s Field in Manchester to demand parliamentary representation. They were met by soldiers who, with sabres drawn, charged at the crowd to break it up. As a result, nearly 700 people were injured and 18 lost their lives; the youngest victim was just two years old.
Leading Peterloo experts, Dr Robert Poole and Dr Katrina Navickas, will be talking about the events of the massacre, as well as the important new sources they have been uncovering at The National Archives. There will also be an opportunity to view original documents relating to the Peterloo Massacre.
