Curators Dirk Booms and Peter Higgs, British Museum introduce the forthcoming special exhibition Sicily: culture and conquest.
It tells the story of two extraordinary periods in the 3,000-year history of the island, whose fertility and strategic position has attracted successive waves of settlers and conquerors.
The first flourishing began around 734 BC, when the ancient Greeks began to arrive on Sicily’s shores in search of trade and adventure. In the Middle Ages the Normans heard of the island’s richness and had conquered it entirely by AD 1091.
Poised between Christian Europe and Islamic North Africa, Sicily became home to one of the most enlightened and tolerant courts in Europe. Includes a complimentary drink.
