Spitfire Girls

In the darkest days of the Second World War, an elite group of courageous civilian women risked their lives on a daily basis as aerial courier pilots, flying Britain’s war planes from factory to airfield. Hear renowned journalist and non-fiction writer Jacky Hyams tell the incredible individual stories of the brave, young female pilots of Air Transport Auxiliary who flew thousands of perilous missions in service of Britain’s war effort.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, we have prepared a series of events that will explore how the status and varied roles of women have changed across society – from the days of the Jacobite risings and throughout the course of the 20th century.

We run an exciting range of events and exhibitions on a wide variety of topics. For more details, visit nationalarchives.gov.uk/whatson.

Entrance to The National Archives is free and there is no need to book, see nationalarchives.gov.uk/visit for more information.
