An early warning, but anyone who commutes into Waterloo might want to grab the Christmas holiday slots at work before anyone else does.

Network Rail is warning that there will be a significantly reduced service on parts of the South Western Railway network between Christmas Day 2020 to Sunday 3rd January 2021.

Platforms 12 – 20 at Waterloo Station will not be in use for the duration of the work and all train services on the Windsor lines will start and terminate at Clapham Junction station. In addition, Vauxhall and Queenstown Road stations will be closed for the duration of the work and there will be queuing systems in place at Waterloo and Clapham Junction stations to manage passenger journeys safely.

Network Rail says that it is using the time to completely renew the ‘switches and crossings’ (moveable sections of track that guide trains from one track to another and allow them to cross paths) at Nine Elms Junction — which is just outside Clapham Junction station.

If that wasn’t replaced, then there is a risk that trains would have to run at reduced speeds over parts of track into and out of Waterloo station.

  • Christmas Eve – there will be an early shut down of South Western Railway services.
  • Christmas Day – no service will run.
  • Boxing Day – no service will run.
  • Sunday 27th Dec 2020 to Sunday 3rd Jan 2021 inclusive – a significantly reduced service. 12 trains per hour will run on the main line.
  • From approximately 11am on New Year’s Eve to approx. 11am on New Year’s Day extra trains will be able to run to London Waterloo for passengers wishing to travel for New Year festivities.
  • A normal service will resume on Monday 4th Jan 2021.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

A nuisance but vital maintenance. Some of this trackwork must be decades old.

    Will do.

  3. I’m not sure I would bet on there being a Christmas Day 2020!

If a second lockdown happens can they close the line longer and make better use of the time?

These projects usually take a year or more of planning work to put into place due to the need to coordinate so many different teams, organiations and suppliers.

I doubt if there will be any New Year celebrations to travel to. They could probably close the line down on both days.
