Description
This October marks the 600th anniversary of the English victory over the French at Agincourt. The Battle has been immortalised in Shakespeare’s play 'Henry V,' but less well known is the part the City of London played.
The Great Chronicle of London illustrates how the news of Henry’s campaign was sent back to London, so the Mayor and Citizens of London followed progress through the long and ultimately successful siege of Harfleur, the march towards Calais and the battle and victory at Agincourt.
The Chronicle describes Henry’s return to London in November, 1415. At Blackheath he was met by 20,000 people who processed with him to London, crossing London Bridge into the City. Here he was met by even greater crowds, colourful and vibrant pageantry - a City leading the nation in celebrating a great victory.
Robert Fabyan (c.1450-1513), was a Sheriff and Alderman of London, and also Master of the Drapers’ Company.
