Surrealism

Surrealism was a cultural movement that developed in the aftermath of the First World War. Influenced by Sigmund Freud's Interpretations of Dreams and Dadaism, Surrealists sought to represent an alternative reality, one that is only accessible through our unconscious and subconscious minds. Their works are weird, dreamlike, otherworldly, and sometimes challenging, but also beautiful, fascinating, and inspiring. Join art historian Claudia Merkle as she delves into the world of Surrealism to discover the hidden meanings behind some of the most famous Surrealist paintings by Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst among others. Claudia Merkle is an art expert and educator at Tate, the Royal Academy, the V&A, the National Gallery, and The Design Museum in London. She has an MA in Early Christian and Byzantine, Modern and Contemporary History of Art and Sociology from the Lugwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany. Claudia is an interdisciplinary thinker and likes to take the customary out of its context to create the unexpected.
