Romanticism

The Romantic artists of the 19th century revolutionized landscape painting. Artists such as J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) and Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) used the staggering beauty and unrelenting drama of our natural world to communicate the deepest human emotions. Reacting to the Industrial Revolution, the Romanticism movement sought to unleash the individual from the restrictions they felt the modern world brought upon society. On February 28th, join art historian Linda Bolton as she uncovers the artistic, social, and intellectual secrets of these famous paintings, and why they are still so relevant to our 21st-century lives. Linda Bolton is an independent art historian and lecturer. She is the author of several books on 19th and 20th-century artists and art movements including Gauguin, Manet, Degas, Warhol, Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism and Pop Art. She is an adjunct professor of Art History for the University of North Carolina’s London Program, has an MA in Victorian Studies, and delivers courses and lectures for the National Gallery.
