The British Library holds 24 volumes of the great encyclopaedia commissioned by the Yongle emperor in 1402 and completed over six centuries ago in 1407. When complete, it comprised over 11,000 volumes, and was always too big to print. This talk by David Helliwell, Curator of Chinese collections, Bodleian Library, takes a look at what it is, how it works, what it was used for, and how it came to be here.
