The heroic male body and associated ideals of masculinity has been challenged in recent years by the body of the male terrorist. However, this lecture by Dr Gabriel Koureas (Birkbeck, University of London), will argue that this recent phenomenon of male body terror can be found in other instances.
One example to be discussed is Robert Maplethorpe's photographic work and his depiction of gay male sexual encounters which provided a challenge at the time to perceived ideas of masculinity. The talk will attempt to juxtapose the male body of the terrorist and gay man in order to discuss transgressions of masculinities.
This event is part of the School of Advanced Study event series 'Hidden & Revealed'.
As our Festival events are free, not everyone who asks for tickets comes to our events. To make sure we have a full house we allocate more tickets than there are seats. We do our best to get the numbers right, but unfortunately we occasionally have to disappoint people. Admission is on a first come, first served basis, so please arrive in good time for the start of the event.
