Great Kingdoms of West Africa

Curator and cultural historian Gus Casely-Hayford, who presented two acclaimed series of Lost Kingdoms of Africa for BBC4, chairs a rich series of talks on some of the powerful and successful civilisations that once dominated vast areas of West Africa. Concurrently with the medieval era in Europe, the region gave rise to the Kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhai, the Mossi Kingdoms of modern Burkina Faso, the Empire of Benin and others – each with a distinct culture and story.
