Zodiac calendars in the Dead Sea Scrolls

Dr Helen Jacobus, is an honorary research associate in the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, UCL. Her interests are calendars, astronomy and astrology in antiquity, the Ancient Near East basis of biblical laws, Ancient Hebrew coins, Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near East, Biblical Hebrew poetry and Biblical Studies.

In this talk, Helen R. Jacobus will analyse the mathematical basis of the Aramaic calendars in the Dead Sea Scrolls. She will re-examine an Aramaic zodiac calendar with a thunder divination text and the calendar from the Aramaic Astronomical Book, all from Qumran, and argue that they are ancestors of today’s Jewish calendar.

The talk will start at 7pm with pre-lecture drinks from 6.30pm.
