The Spitalfields Charnel House (bone store or ossuary) was built in the early 14th century as the crypt of a chapel that stood in the cemetery of St Mary Spital (hospital) priory. For more than 200 years it provided a repository for bones which were uncovered when gravediggers buried new bodies in the hospital churchyard.
This guided tour will provide rare access into the Charnel House. This building was destined for removal, but its exceptional rarity and completeness led to extensive negotiations for its preservation. It is now protected within Bishops Square.
Jane Sidell, Inspector of Ancient Monuments will outline the history of the building and excavations.
Tickets £8 including a Hendrick's Gin Cocktail.
