Free FreeOperational since 1982 The Thames Barrier protects our city from being flooded by exceptionally high tides and storm surges moving up from the North Sea.
Once a year The Thames Barrier is operated over a full tidal circle. Built across a 520 metre stretch of river and weighing an enormous 3,700 tonnes, the closure of The Thames Barrier is quite the spectacle and an impressive display and celebration of British design!
An interesting and unusual day out, the closure offers visitors insight into how London remains operational as a modern city by keeping the forces of nature at bay.
