Following the Chartists around London

This event has finished Took place on: Monday, 21st Sep 2015

 Free

Join us for free talks and a walking tour of some of the pubs and other buildings where the Chartist movement held meetings in the 1840s.

The afternoon begins with lunch (provided) at the British Library, followed by some short talks by historians about the history and geography of Chartism, the first mass movement for democracy in Britain.

We then go on a walking tour (c.3 km), following a route from the British Library, through Warren Street to Soho, visiting pubs and former pubs where the Chartists met to campaign for the 'People's Charter'. Find out which pubs still exist from this early Victorian period. The tour ends with a re-enactment of a Chartist meeting in the Red Lion, Kingly Street, off Regent Street.

The event is part of the British Library Labs competition in Digital Scholarship 2015. One of the winners, Dr Katrina Navickas of the University of Hertfordshire, will be leading the tour and explaining her project, 'Political Meetings Mapper'.
