On 7 May, the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania was commemorated in Liverpool and Cork.
On that fateful day in 1915, over 1,200 passengers and nearly 700 crew were aboard Lusitania, which was nearing the end of her journey from New York to Liverpool. Tragedy struck and Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat. Having been hit on the starboard bow, the Lusitania foundered rapidly, sinking within 18 minutes.
When we come together to commemorate Merchant Navy Day at Trinity Sq Gardens, Tower Hill, on 6 September, this year’s focus will be even more poignant as we look back 100 years. We will remember not only the 1,197 victims of the Lusitania but all those who lost their lives during this tragic period of World War I.
