This walk looks at how and why the City of London has been built in its present form. There is a strong emphasis on architecture. Following the Great Fire of London, Southwark Cathedral at 169 feet (50 metres) was the tallest building that could be seen from the City of London. When St Pauls Cathedral was completed on Christmas Day 1711 it became the tallest building in the City of London at 365 feet (111 metres) and it remained the tallest building in the City of London until 1964 (yes. The date is correct). If that surprises you, you may also be surprised to learn that 80% of commercial buildings have been replaced since 1985.
Modern buildings are dealt with in detail including constructional details. On this walk you get close to the base of many of the buildings in the picture.
