Ice Sunday at London Canal Museum

This event has finished Took place on: Sunday, 19th Jul 2015

 Free

A rare opportunity for fit adults and older teenagers to descend into the ice wells on a guided tour, with an explanation of their history by a museum guide.

The ice wells are a unique piece of industrial archaeology. Although there are other ice wells, these are the only ones you can still look at. They are commercial ice wells on a large scale built 1857-62 to store ice imported from Norway, and brought from the docks by canal boat.

On Ice Sunday we take visitors down the ladders in small groups to see them. To participate you must be fit enough to climb ladders and wear robust footwear that cannot fall off. No sandals, flip-flops, or loose-fitting shoes. Adults and teenagers only, no children under 13 please.
