Dickens knew Barnet and Finchley extremely well. He knew their pubs, and drank in them. He knew their schools: he wrote a very unflattering essay about a famous Barnet institution in his journal, Household Words. Barnet was the setting for a chapter of Oliver Twist. He lived in Finchley for a short while, and wrote about it in many of his novels. Hear about Dickens's many connections, with Barnet, Finchley, Hendon, Elstree, and other parts of north London.
