Dr. Cindy Lawford gives a tour of Jermyn Street, where traditional English gentlemen love to shop and where the rest of us can find much to wonder at and admire.
The tour combines a fair amount of historic background and gossip (Was the father of Charles II actually Henry Jermyn? Which famous movie star got thrown out of a Turkish bath?) with visits to several of the traditional shops, where the staff and craftsmen do the talking. We visit, for example, the oldest cheese shop (Paxton & Whitfield), oldest perfumer (Floris) and oldest shoe retailer in the UK(Foster & Son), as well as hearing from the tailors at Harvie & Hudson and Turnbull & Asser how some of the finest shirts in the world are made.
There are also three art galleries, a theatre and a Christopher Wren church to see and hear about. The tour lasts just over 2 hours, and starts at Jermyn Street Theatre.
