There are many environmental initiatives and legislation affecting the British countryside: protection of scenic and habitat areas, safeguards for particular species, restrictions on development, and animal welfare legislation. However, our countryside is still damaged by pressures that are reducing biodiversity, increasing flooding, damaging soil fertility and rendering our scenery less diverse.

The reasons behind environmental deterioration will be examined as well as strategies to improve quality whilst feeding more people.
