If you thought East London stopped at Stratford, think again. East Ham was part of Metropolitan Essex but it is now very much part of London and home to a fascinating mix of people drawn by its excellent transport links and the relative affordability of its housing.

Completely rural until 1850, the coming of the railway led to unprecedented growth in housing, the fastest in the country. Walk down its beautiful tree-lined Victorian and Edwardian streets and learn about the humble beginnings of some famous English stars.

Called ‘the most London of London Markets’ by Time Out, 100 year old Queen’s Market was saved from demolition by local people standing together to stop the developers. Here you can find unbelievably cheap fruit and vegetables, side by side with colourful fabrics, jewellery and fish.
