Talk by Chris Hariades, Greenspace project officer, Islington Council
Plans are being drawn up to conserve the grade II listed Caledonian Park Clock Tower and reopen it for local people, and build a visitor centre.
The seven-storey clock tower, listed grade II*, was opened in 1855 as the centrepiece of the Metropolitan Cattle Market. After the market closed, it was replaced by the Market Estate and Caledonian Park. Caledonian Park, originally called Copenhagen Fields, was a tea garden as well as a site of political dissent – 100,000 people gathered there in support of the Tolpuddle Martyrs in 1834.
The council is developing detail proposals for the project and has commissioned reports and surveys. One study has found “significant archaeological potential” below ground, including what may be remains of Copenhagen House.
