Divided by race, united in war and peace: film screening

This event has finished Took place on: Tuesday, 9th Dec 2014

 Free

This documentary is a hidden history that is virtually untold, and captures the personal testimonies of 14 former military personnel - black and white - in a moving, revealing, provocative and often witty format.

“They fought under the British flag and risked their lives to keep the country free from Hitler’s Nazis only to have to fight another battle to be accepted as UK citizens”.

The event will be attended by the producer and co-director Marc Wadsworth, associate producer, Deborah Hobson and one of the veterans featured in the film

The film tells how the UK’s white community usually embraced the black troops in WWII and often protected them against the racism imported with the US troops who arrived after 1942, but how this attitude changed for the worse once the former black troops came back to Britain - without their uniforms. The film also controversially contends that multiculturalism, the legacy of the generation of Caribbean ex-veterans who came back to Britain on the former troop ship the Empire ‘Windrush’ in 1948, is today under attack from politicians at the highest level.

This event is in association with the Southwark Local History Library and Archive.
